Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 1 cup of rice and 1/4 cup of yellow split moong dal together until water runs clear.
2. In a pot, combine the rice-dal mixture with 4 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil.
3. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until soft and mushy, about 20-25 minutes.
4. In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee. Add 1 teaspoon of black peppercorns and 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds. Saute until aromatic.
5. Add a pinch of asafoetida, 1 tablespoon of grated ginger, and a handful of cashew nuts. Saute until golden.
6. Pour the tempered mixture over the cooked rice and dal. Mix gently.
7. Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve hot.
