Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 100g of basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
2. In a large saucepan, bring 1 liter of whole milk to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
3. Add the rinsed rice to the boiling milk. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring frequently, until the rice is tender and the mixture thickens, about 30-40 minutes.
4. Stir in 150g of sugar and 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom. Continue to cook for another 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
5. Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped almonds and 2 tablespoons of pistachios.
6. Allow the kheer to cool slightly before serving, garnishing with a few saffron strands, if desired.
