Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 1 cup of toor dal thoroughly under running water.
2. In a pot, combine dal with 3 cups of water, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric, and salt. Cook until soft.
3. In a separate pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee.
4. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds and let them splutter.
5. Add 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 chopped onion, and saute until golden.
6. Stir in 1 chopped tomato and cook until soft.
7. Add 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder and 1 teaspoon garam masala. Mix well.
8. Pour the tempering over the cooked dal; simmer for 5 minutes.
9. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
