Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 1 cup basmati rice thoroughly, then cook with 2 cups water until fluffy. Set aside.
2. Soak a lemon-sized ball of tamarind in 1 cup warm water for 15 minutes. Extract juice and discard pulp.
3. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a pan. Add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds and let them splutter.
4. Add 1 tablespoon chana dal and 1 tablespoon urad dal. Saute until golden.
5. Stir in 2 dried red chilies, 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida, and 8 curry leaves. Cook briefly.
6. Pour in tamarind juice, add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric, and 1 teaspoon salt. Simmer until thickened.
7. Mix the tamarind sauce with cooked rice. Adjust salt to taste.
8. Add 1/4 cup roasted peanuts for crunch.
9. Serve warm, garnished with fresh coriander.
