Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 1 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of lentils (moong dal) under cold water until the water runs clear.
2. In a large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee or oil over medium heat.
3. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
4. Stir in 1 finely chopped onion and saute until golden.
5. Add 1 teaspoon of grated ginger, 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder, and a pinch of asafoetida. Cook briefly.
6. Mix in the rinsed rice and lentils, stirring to coat with spices.
7. Pour in 5 cups of water, and season with salt to taste.
8. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until soft and creamy.
9. Stir occasionally, adding more water if needed to reach desired consistency.
10. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro or a dollop of yogurt.
