Preparation steps:

1. Boil 2 cups of water in a pan.
2. Add 2 chopped tomatoes and cook until soft.
3. Mash the tomatoes gently in the pan.
4. Add 1 teaspoon of tamarind paste and stir.
5. In a separate pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil.
6. Add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, let them splutter.
7. Add 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, 2 dried red chilies, and a pinch of asafoetida.
8. Stir in 8 curry leaves and saute briefly.
9. Pour this tempering into the tomato mixture.
10. Add 1 teaspoon rasam powder, salt to taste, and 2 cups of water.
11. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
12. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
