Preparation steps:

1. Rinse 1 cup of toor dal under cold water until the water runs clear.
2. In a large pan, add the dal and 3 cups of water.
3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer. Skim off any foam.
4. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric and salt to taste.
5. Cook until the dal is tender, about 25-30 minutes.
6. In a separate pan, heat 2 tablespoons of ghee or oil.
7. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
